Providence Laboratory Assistant II in Walla Walla, Washington

Description:

Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant II (Clinical Laboratory Services, Variable, 0.0 FTE) to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Participate in hospital and department specific practices to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of data and information used in performance of his/her daily duties conforming to hospital policy, laws and regulations as appropriate.

  • Follow established policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risks of acquiring or transmitting infection.

  • Maintain positive working relationships and fosters a cooperative work environment.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, physicians and staff in a professional manner.

  • Provide clear, concise, pertinent reports/information.

  • Notify appropriate personnel of problems related to specimen collection or testing.

  • Recognize and reports signs/symptom of abuse and neglect for all ages of patients served.

  • Respond to the needs of the patient as appropriate.

  • Utilize a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to ensure that specimen collection is completed at the appropriate time to meet clinical needs.

  • Adhere to NPSG standards using two patient identifiers when providing laboratory services.

  • Utilize Rover specimen identification system during the collection process.

  • Label blood and other specimens in the presence of the patient. Correctly completes blood bank ID band per laboratory procedure.

  • Receive specimens in the laboratory information system and includes all pertinent information.

  • Ensure that any specimen that arrives in the laboratory is processed in a timely manner, per lab policy.

  • Provide information on testing procedures/ specimen collection as needed.

  • Assure that specimens are transported to the correct area in a timely and professional manner.

  • Adhere to safety precautions including hazardous wastes and proper sharps disposal.

  • Understand and comply with department Chemical Hygiene Plan.

  • Document all discrepancies and problems properly.

  • Use computer accurately to enter patient information and order tests.

  • Mentor new employees.

  • Support laboratory quality assurance initiatives that are being monitored.

  • Employee completes all tasks and duties accurately and timely within assigned shift. Demonstrates initiative to perform job duties autonomously.

  • Attend mandatory and other education offerings per department and hospital requirements.

  • Expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

  • JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrate a concern for efficiency and cost effectiveness.

  • Keep leadership apprised of problems, workflow and other relevant issues.

  • Stock and clean the laboratory.

  • Clean phlebotomy tray and other areas of the laboratory as needed.

  • Perform limited analytic testing within the scope of the position.

  • Perform culture plating, processing and gram staining.

  • Willing to adapt personal work schedule to department needs.

  • Assist with staffing issues and problem solving.

  • Provide education for new employees and current Lab Assistant I’s.

  • Manage work flow to ensure that all collection and processing is completed in a timely manner.

  • Assist with tracking inventory and ordering supplies.

  • Review and sign technical procedure and policy manuals annually.

  • Attend at least 50% of staff meetings.

  • Perform limited analytic testing for POC glucose with Provider or Nursing instruction. Runs quality control if needed. Reports results to Nursing and is able to recognize a critical glucose result. Some troubleshooting of device may be required.

  • Able to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on infants and collect samples for PKU and other laboratory testing.

  • Demonstrate an ability to use, do Maintenance, troubleshoot and work on processing automation equiptment.

  • May be required to assist nursing on the Units with some patient care needs that are within scope of practice.

  • Able to pass a shipping course every two years to assist with shipping dangerous goods to reference labs.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of a formal Phlebotomy Training program.

  • State of Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist certification or Medical Assistant Certified certification.

  • Current BLS-Healthcare provider (AHA accredited).

  • Three (3) years previous phlebotomy experience.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • ASCP certified phlebotomist.
