Providence Health & Services Laboratory Assistant I in Walla Walla, Washington


Providence is calling a Laboratory Assistant I (PMG, Day Shift, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Medical Group Southeast Washington in Walla Walla, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Consistently demonstrates adherence to the principles and requirements outlined in the Commitments and Compliance Integrity Program and any other organization or departmental materials related to compliance with laws, regulatory requirements.

  • Consistently demonstrates adherence to Medicare and Medicaid regulations which directly or indirectly relate to the performance and job expectations.

  • Employee demonstrates knowledge of PSMMC’s policy on Patients Rights and Responsibilities and respects these rights and responsibilities in carrying-out daily activities.

  • Actively participates in departmental and organization performance improvement activities in accordance with hospital and joint commission standards.

  • Performs his/her work in a manner that meets or exceeds the level of care and service that PSMMC promotes to the communities we serve.

  • Participates in department specific practices to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

  • Maintains the security and confidentiality of data and information used in performance of his/her daily duties conforming to organizational policy, laws and regulations as appropriate.

  • Follows established policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risks of acquiring or transmitting infection.

  • Maintains positive working relationships and fosters a cooperative work environment.

  • Communicates effectively with patients, physicians and staff in a professional manner.

  • Provides clear, concise, pertinent reports/information.

  • Notifies appropriate personnel of problems related to specimen collection or testing.

  • Recognizes and reports signs/symptom of abuse and neglect for all ages of patients served.

  • Responds to the needs of the patient as appropriate.

  • Utilizes a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to ensure that specimen collection is completed at the appropriate time to meet clinical needs.

  • Adheres to NPSG standards using two patient identifiers when providing laboratory services.

  • Utilizes Rover specimen identification system during the collection process.

  • Labels blood and other specimens in the presence of the patient. Correctly completes blood bank ID band per laboratory procedure.

  • Ensures that all specimens arrive in the laboratory so is able to be processed in a timely manner, per lab policy.

  • Provides information on testing procedures/ specimen collection as needed.

  • Assures that specimens are transported to the correct area in a timely and professional manner.

  • Adheres to safety precautions including hazardous wastes and proper sharps disposal.

  • Understands and complies with department Chemical Hygiene Plan.

  • Documents all discrepancies and problems properly.

  • Uses computer accurately to enter patient information and order tests.

  • Supports laboratory quality assurance initiatives that are being monitored.

  • Employee completes all tasks and duties accurately and timely within assigned shift. Demonstrates initiative to perform job duties autonomously.

  • Attends mandatory and other education offerings per department and hospital requirements.

  • Expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Successful completion of a formal phlebotomy program Training program

  • Within 30 days of hire:

  • State of Washington Medical Assistant-Phlebotomistcertification

  • Current BLS-Healthcare provider (AHA accredited)

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • ASCP certified phlebotomist.

  • Previous phlebotomy experience
