Swedish Health Services Executive Director, Surgical Services in Seattle, Washington
Reporting directly to the System Chief Operating Officer, the Executive Director, Surgical Services, has responsibility for the operation of the Professional Nursing Practice within Surgical Services. The Executive Director, Surgical Services directs nursing services by approval and implementation of nursing policies, procedures, standards and staffing plans. As a member of the nursing leadership team, they assume an active leadership role interdepartmentally, with the medical staff, and act as a key representative in Surgical Services to the community on behalf of the COO as deemed necessary. With a constant focus on whole person care, quality, staff and patient safety, the Executive Director, Surgical Services maintains standards and systems for care delivery across Swedish's hospitals. These systems of care delivery promote evidence-based practice and are designed to support the management of productivity targets, patient acuity, and appropriate planning for and use of available resources.
The Executive Director is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation and associated business lines for the Surgical Services vertical. In this capacity, the Executive Director carries responsibility for assisting in development and integration of the Surgical Services strategic plan with operations.
The Executive Director will exercise management responsibility over the acute care vertical, ensuring efficient services that are designed to meet the needs of patients, physicians, the public and staff. This will either be done directly, or through delegation of responsibility to the management staff. The Executive Director provides direct or indirect oversight of their day-to-day operations of the functional areas and rotates as Administrator on Call.
The Executive Director, Surgical Services will have the following accountabilities:
Creates a work environment that facilitates and encourages involvement of the staff in critical thinking to enact professional nursing practice.
Build collaborative relationships.
Adhere to professional association standards of nursing practice.
Ensure that written organizational clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice.
Uses shared decision making to accomplish the organization’s primary goal which is service to patients, families and the community.
Communicate patient care standards as established by accreditation, regulatory and quality agencies.
Ensure compliance with the State Nurse Practice Act, State Board of Nursing regulations, state and federal regulatory agency standards, federal labor standards and policies of the organization.
Develop and manage an annual operating budget and long-term capital expenditure plan.
Use business models for health care organizations and apply fundamental concepts of economics.
Provide leadership for the adoption and implementation of information systems including evaluation of enabling technology in practice settings, the use of data management systems for clinical decision making, and, identifying technological trends, issues and developments applicable to patient care.
Required experience/education for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Master's Degree Business Management or Health Administration
5 years Operational leadership in surgical services and/or interventional services
5 years Progressive management experience in a complex, multi-site health system
Active and current Washington registered nurse license.
