Swedish Health Services Counselor - Addiction Recovery Services in Seattle, Washington


Swedish Medical Center is looking for an ARS Counselor (0.9 FTE, Day Shift) to work for Addiction Recovery Services at Swedish Ballard in Seattle, WA.

Relative to Older Adults/Adults/Adolescents: Conducts biopsychosocial assessments utilizing approved assessment instruments; interprets patient disclosures and collateral contacts to determine the presence of a substance use disorder and/or mental health disorder. Utilizes DSM multi-axial diagnosis and ASAM PPC to assess appropriate level of care. Provides individual/group counseling, case management, discharge planning, education, and referral assistance to individuals with substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions.

In this position you will:

  • Displays knowledge of substance use and/or mental health disorder and theory.

  • Explains the nature of substance use and mental health disorders as a primary and/or secondary illness. Implements strategies that address primary and co-occurring disorders. Teaches importance of support groups such as AA, NA, CA and mental health and self-help groups, describes the unique dynamics of co-dependency and denial, relapse dynamics and cross addiction and explains the program’s philosophy of treatment.

  • Recognizes the patient’s age as a relevant factor and applies appropriate decision-making skills in the assessment, treatment, and care provided for the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Identifies and evaluates the biopsychosocial antecedents, influences, and effects associated with substance use and/or mental health disorders.

  • Initiates referrals for needed services that are not directly provided by the program.

  • Completes or ensures recertifications with managed care to ensure that patients receive necessary health care benefits.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Associate's Degree in Social work, psychology, sociology, or other human services or related field, in accordance with WAC 246-811-030

  • Valid Chemical Dependency Professional Certification issued by the Washington State Department of Health/ Health Professionals Quality Assurance Division.

  • One (1) year counseling experience in a state-approved substance abuse or mental health facility

  • Minimum of 3 years of recent (last 5 years) documented experience working with adolescents that have substance abuse and concurrent mental health problems; at least 3 years of experience of working within middle/high school systems as a substance abuse intervention specialist

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social work, psychology, sociology, or other behavioral science field
