St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Emergency Department Technician in Santa Rosa, California

We are looking for an Emergency Department Technician - NUHW (National Union of Healthcare Workers) with the Emergency Room at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Location: Santa Rosa, CA

Schedule: On Call / Per Diem

Shift: 12-hour Evenings

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of an RN/LVN, the ED Patient Care Technician will provide direct patient care within their scope of practice.

Essential Functions:

  • Responds to emergent clinical needs of patients and staff members in the Emergency Department setting maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Demonstrates competency when performing patient care procedures within scope of practice to include the following: procedural set-ups, splinting, wound care, ear irrigation, x-ray and lab order entry, urine dip sticks, blood glucose testing, measuring intake/output, transporting of patients, taking vital signs, and EKGs.

  • Maintains safe working environment by adhering to all hospital and department policies and procedures. Identifies and reports unsafe procedures.

  • Documents data collected and care provided within scope of practice.

  • Assembles and maintains patients’ medical record and transcribes physician orders in an accurate and efficient manner, which facilitates ongoing communication of information.

  • Coordinates and tracks the discharge, transfer and movement of patient and post mortem process of a patient according to standards.

  • Demonstrates responsibility for containment of hospital costs and conservation of office supplies; identifies potential cost savings.

  • Establishes and maintains a safe, clean and organized physical environment in the nurses’ station.

  • Initiates the trauma activation process under the direction of the lead RN and communicates effectively with members of the trauma team to facilitate patient care.

  • Reports patient/visitor concerns, complaints and information to nursing staff.

  • Demonstrates accountability for apprising self of hospital and department communication/information.

  • Ability to prioritize effectively and utilizes good judgement in making decisions.

  • Provides patient comfort and privacy during all interactions.

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (both verbal and written).

  • Ability to interact with patient, co-workers, and physicians in a courteous, service oriented manner.

  • Demonstrates an attitude of cooperation and flexibility by responding to varying and unpredictable situations.

  • Demonstrates ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to transport and lift patients using hospital approved lifting devices or techniques.

  • EKG.

  • Assemble oxygen equipment.

  • Blood glucose monitoring (acute only).

  • Ability to perform appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of information systems.

  • Able to give/receive constructive feedback.

  • All ratings on performance evaluation are on target (OT) or above.

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of direct patient care experience in an acute care setting within the past five (5) years is required, unless related certification has been achieved within the past two (2) years (see Preferred Qualifications below).

License / Certification:

  • BLS Certification within 60 days of hire is required.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • EMT, CNA, Medical Assistant, or Paramedic.

  • Previous ED Technician experience

  • Medical terminology

  • Computer skills
