St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Area Director, Infection Prevention in Santa Rosa, California


The Area Director, Infection Prevention oversees the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the Infection Prevention (IP) Program for St. Joseph Health Northern California ministries.


The Area Director, Infection Prevention will have the following accountabilities:

  • Annually evaluates the system-wide program for surveillance, prevention and control of infection. Develops and revises the Infection Prevention plan according to the evaluation process, organizational assessment and surveillance activities.

  • Coordinates the overall IP program for all SJH Sonoma County ministries. Integrates department activities with the rest of the organization’s strategic goals.

  • Oversees the creation, approval, customization, implementation, review and revision of IP policies to assure compliance with regulating and accrediting bodies as well as to include relevant recommended evidence-based practices.

  • Maintains current professional practice standards as set forth by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

  • Coaches and develops the skills and talents of the IP departments’ employees. Supervises the hiring, training, and performance reviews of Infection Prevention staff.

  • Performs and oversees the submission of facility data to regulatory bodies. Maintains expert-level awareness of all relevant state, federal, and accrediting organization regulations, standards, and/or guidelines. Ensures the infection prevention program maintains alignment and compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines.

  • Directs and performs the ongoing collection and analytical review of infection prevention data.

  • Leads and participates in performance improvement teams.

  • Plans/provides educational programs for all hospital personnel.

  • Provides consultation to hospital personnel and to outside agencies that interface with the facility.

  • Creates and maintains strong relationships with colleagues and leaders, including ministry CNO, CMO, executive quality leaders, service line leaders, and leaders across the continuum of care (ambulatory, home health, hospital, long term care, etc).

  • Demonstrates understanding of high reliability principles through the use of tools, tones, and behaviors that promote patient safety.

  • Maintains the ability to interact effectively with all levels of health care personnel in Providence St Joseph Health facilities and other health care facilities, public health services at the local, state, and national levels; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention


  • Bachelor degree in Nursing, or related health care field with advanced degree in public health or nursing preferred.

  • 5 years in acute care facility with Infection Prevention program and Management/coordination.

  • License/Certification: Current licensure in California as a Registered Nurse or related health care field. Certification by the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC).

  • Demonstrated understanding of high reliability principles through the use of tools, tones, and behaviors that promote patient safety.

  • Working knowledge and ability to demonstrate comprehension of Infection Prevention principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of pertinent regulatory, accrediting, and advisory body requirements including, but not limited to, state and federal regulations, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • Must be able to assume a leadership role in cost-effective prevention of transmissible diseases and emergency management of outbreaks of novel pathogens.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to educate and respond to hospital and external agency personnel.

  • Critical thinking and decision making skills

  • Must be computer literate, with a working knowledge of an epidemiology software system.

  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of quality assurance monitoring.

  • Must provide evidence of continuing education within the last year with emphasis on aspects of infectious diseases, infection prevention, or public health.

  • Must be able to treat all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and Security.

  • Must be able to cooperate fully in all risk management activities and investigations.
