We are seeking a Supervisor Sterile Processing who will provide supervision support to the SPD staff and is expected to coordinate, and oversee the material and human resources in alignment with AORN, AAMI and CDC guidelines/ standards. This individual possesses demonstrated leadership ability and experience in decontamination, assembly, processing and sterilization of instruments/trays and equipment for a full array of sterilizing methods; additionally, he/she has the full knowledge of regulations related to the monitoring and validation process of sterilized items.

In this position you will:

  • Supervise the daily operations of the SPD Department.

  • Review forecasted surgery schedules to plan staffing needs.

  • Ensure compliance with established safety, infection prevention and sterilization standards and protocols based on the recommendations of AAMI.

  • Follow departmental and quality assurance standards regarding labeling, record keeping for chemical or biological indicator monitoring.

  • Interact with Specialty Coordinators to assist with special sterilization requests for specialty instruments or trays, reporting of non-functioning or broken instruments, revising and reviewing instrument tray protocols and providing resource for obtaining and finding needed instruments for the operating room.

  • Assist in the capital acquisition planning and implementation.

  • Supervise departmental operating budget without negative variances.

  • Supervise daily productivity standards.

  • Manage the proper handling and processing of loaner trays to avoid compromising incubation periods.

  • Respond to physician complaints timely and responsibly.

  • Take responsibility for the efficiency matters in OR including but not limited to the timely start of surgical cases.

  • Manage implant and instrument consignment banks through working with vendors and Specialty Coordinators.

  • Provide for training and ongoing education of employees within the departments.

  • Support the philosophy, objectives and goals of hospital administration and its representatives.

  • Manage performance improvement (PI) initiatives within SPD and jointly with OR.

  • Create reports for the Infection Prevention Committee, and as needed.

  • Assist co-workers in times of increased workload as needed.

  • Control turnaround time of specialty instrument tray to ensure availability for same day use.

  • Use any downtime to effectively accomplish administrative objectives and project management.

  • Practice cost-effective methods in the delivery of care through efficient use of available resources.

  • Lead staff in work assignments and supervises shift coordination with SPD Coordinators.

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regard to:

  • Attendance, punctuality and patient confidentiality.

  • Positive public relation image and working relationships.

  • Necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence and certifications.

  • Completing all mandatory requirements (annual safety programs and annual physical).

  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department and hospital goals.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Medical terminology course or prior earned knowledge via experience.

  • Certified Healthcare Leader certification is required or it must be completed within six months of hire.

  • Registered/Certified status from IAHCSMM or equivalent.

  • BLS certification required only if taking call in patient care areas.

  • Ability to deal effectively with many people across a broad range of cultural backgrounds and ages.

  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to work effectively with many people at various levels of the organization.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and appropriately prioritize.

  • Ability to clearly communicate with internal and external customers, including, but not limited to, co-workers, management, physicians, and vendors.

  • Ability to communicate with excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge and ability to be proficient in P.C. software applications including, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Ability to demonstrate cooperative and proactive behavior in all interactions.

  • Ability to adapt and accommodate to changes in daily routine.

  • Ability to anticipate needs of department and staff in a pro-active manner.

  • Ability to initiate problem resolution in difficult interpersonal situations.

  • Ability to perform additional duties or tasks as requested by the Specialty Coordinators, managers, or clinical staff.

  • Ability to maintain an effective interdepartmental and public relationship by keeping open lines of communication.

  • Ability to facilitate the integration of new personnel into the group. Act as a preceptor as needed.

  • Ability to participate consistently in managerial, departmental, educational and committee meetings.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Surgery experience as a surgical technician.

  • Three (3) years central sterile experience as a department Supervisor.
