We are seeking a Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist who will be responsible for providing services designed to reduce mental disability and improvement or maintenance of functioning consistent with the goals of learning, development, independent living and enhanced self-sufficiency. Such services may include: rehabilitation activities to assist in improving, maintaining or restoring skills, e.g., functioning, daily living social and leisure, grooming and personal hygiene and medication education, or, case management services to provide linkage and consultation to resources, monitoring of progress, and plan development.

In this position you will:

  • Plan and direct the program within the therapeutic milieu, which promotes the psychological and developmental growth for seriously emotionally disturbed children, ages 2.5-6 years old.

  • Comply with hospital, department and unit standards, including but not limited to safety, infection control, quality management, environmental, confidentiality, and patient care.

  • Prioritize work and provides prompt and efficient service.

  • Demonstrate competency in selected clinical skills. Includes but not limited to:

  • Organize, with co-Specialist, an appropriately supervised day program which includes: recreational activities, field trips and small group activities in the group milieu; a daily community meeting in the milieu; music, art or other self-expression activities; interpersonal and adaptive skill building through group socialization and process groups.

  • Assure documentation of services through daily Progress Notes, and/or reviews and co-signs the daily Progress Notes of Therapeutic Child Specialist I (co-Specialist).

  • Provide, with co-Specialist, a multi-activity curriculum including individual task completion, goal-directed behaviors, as well as, age appropriate and normative school readiness activities, including communication and language development, visual motor skills, etc.

  • Develop, and document a diagnostic assessment of each child’s individual capacity to complete a task or a series of tasks in (pre) reading, language, (pre) math, socialization, and (pre) writing.

  • Develop, and implement an individualized educational plan for each child.

  • Coordinate and document Parent Conferences (“Chats”) at least twice a year.

  • Maintain an effective behavioral, instructional, and remedial and safe environment.

  • Supervise and assist in training aides, students and volunteers.

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Therapeutic Preschool Team.

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own performance on Team in regards to:

  • Attendance and punctuality.

  • Positive public relations image and working relationships.

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence.

  • Completing all mandatory requirements.

  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department, and hospital goals including:

  • Attending and participating in Department and Team meetings.

  • Volunteering or accepting assignments for projects.

  • Mission, vision and team ground rules.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • B.A in child development, early childhood education, psychology, social work or related field OR A.A. degree in above field, plus six (6) years in a mental health setting; Twelve (12) post-secondary units in early childhood education.

  • Basic CPR and First Aid. Those not having this will be provided training nce job begins.

  • Requires knowledge of mental health issues, both theory and practice; crisis intervention techniques; assessment techniques; understanding of family systems dynamics; and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Requires strong crisis intervention, assessment, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to increase knowledge as demonstrated by attendance at a minimum of two educational seminars/meetings a year

  • Highly organizational ability

  • Personality and stamina to work with severely handicapped children

  • Leadership ability

  • Ability to provide an enriched classroom environment and curriculum

  • Class I CA Driver’s License; drive van as required for child transportation, field trips, etc.

  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking/sitting

  • Heavy physical effort lifting or objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching

  • Subject to frequent interruptions

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Four (4) years work in a mental health setting
