Providence is calling a Histology Technician II for Full-Time Day Shift to Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA
We are seeking a Histology Technician II who will prepare human tissue specimens for diagnostic examination by fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy (cutting/mounting), routine/special staining; Performs routine instrument operations with working knowledge of maintenance and troubleshooting protocol; Evaluate routine/special stains for expected reactivity and quality of section; Maintain records of special stain control results and department statistics as required. If assigned, performs automated immunohistochemistry staining and assists with Quality Assurance activities including procedure development and written protocols.
In this position you will:
Histology:
Perform patient and department assessment; prioritize work and provides prompt and efficient service
Demonstrate competency in selected skills, including but not limited to:
Preparation of human tissue specimens for diagnostic examination including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining
Performance of routine instrument operations with working knowledge of maintenance and troubleshooting protocol
Evaluation of routine and special stain slides for expected reactivity and quality of section
Verification/clarification (if appropriate), completion of pathologist special stain requests
Assisting with Quality Assurance activities and procedure writing if assigned
Maintaining records of results (special stains) and departmental statistics as required
Maintaining inventory and supplies
Preparation of reagents as appropriate
Immunohistochemistry (if assigned):
Complete routine staining runs on the Automated Immunohistochemistry instrument
Prepare slides for and completes cover-slipping of all stained slides
Verify intended reactivity of control slides
Maintain records of quality control and daily run reports
Implementation of new antibody protocol/new detection methodology including selection of appropriate tissue controls, antibody validation, and evaluation of stained slides for intended reactivity
Performance of routine automated instrument operations including maintenance and troubleshooting protocol
Preparing reagents, maintaining adequate inventory of supplies
Detection kit and antibody validation and daily run reports
Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regards to:
Attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality
Positive public relation image and working relationships
Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence
Completing all mandatory requirements, including annual safety films, CPR, infection control and annual physical
Participate in the development and attainment of team, department, & hospital goals including:
Attending and participating in division meetings
Volunteering or accepting assignment for projects
Mission, vision and team ground rules
May function as General Supervisor (if qualified under CLIA 88 regulations, section 493) if designated by the Medical Director, Pathology
Ensure compliance with licensing / accrediting standards. Is responsible for the following:
Preparation of human tissue specimens for diagnostic examination including fixation, processing by dehydration and clarifying, embedding of processed specimens into paraffin, cutting tissue sections using the microtome, mounting of tissue sections on appropriate microscope slides, routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and special staining as required by the pathologist. Coverslips, correlates with associated transcription and distributes prepared tissue slides for examination by pathologist
If assigned, performs automated immunohistochemical stains including verification of intended reactivity
Perform daily departmental QC, instrument and stain quality control, and preventive maintenance
If assigned, assist with Quality Assurance activities including documentation and completion of CAP SURVEYS, procedure development and written protocol
Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever routine systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect tissue slide preparation or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify department supervisor or appropriate pathologist
Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
Maintain required records to meet licensing and accreditation requirements of all appropriate regulatory agencies
Stay up-to-date on current regulations and technical / clinical information:
Keep current with regulations related to his / her section of the laboratory and ensure compliance with them in a timely manner
Keep informed of current advances related to his / her specialty and communicate applicable information for the procedures of the section
Respond to actual / potential risk to patient / employee by taking action to correct, minimize, or prevent risk
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours)
ASCP certification or eligible or graduate of approved School of Histology
2 years clinical histology experience with a broad range of specimen types demonstrating competency in specimen preparatory techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, routine and special staining and microscopic analysis for quality and expected reactivity
Ability to deal effectively with many people across a broad range of cultural backgrounds and ages
Excellent human relations and oral / written communications skills
Proficient in P.C. software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-Point, Outlook, etc
Ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate work
Ability to work effectively with many people at various levels of the organization
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to handle multiple tasks and appropriately prioritize
Ability to clearly communicate with internal and external customers, including, but not limited to, patients, co-workers, management, physicians, and visitors
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance to hospital policy
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- 2 years college with academic credits with 12 semester hours in biological sciences
