Providence Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Generalist in Santa Monica, California

Providence is calling a CLS Generalist for Full-Time Day Shift to Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA

We are seeking a CLS who will perform accurate analysis of laboratory specimens. Demonstrate a high degree of proficiency and understanding in laboratory procedures in one or more sections of the Pathology Department or demonstrate competency in three or more sections, to facilitate quality patient care and diagnosis. Participate in solution of technical problems requiring a great degree of independent judgment and assist in development of testing in the assigned section(s). Participate in training and teaching responsibilities of the department.

In this position you will:

  • Ensure compliance with licensing / accrediting standards

  • Be responsible for performing only those high complexity tests authorized by the laboratory director and only those meeting the required degree of skills commensurate with his/her education, training or experience and technical abilities (Federal Register § 493.1495)

  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results

  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency test samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens

  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations

  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance

  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify a general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or the director

  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications

  • Be (if) qualified under Federal Register § 493.1489(b)(4), must perform high complexity testing only under the onsite direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under § 493.1461

  • Be responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained

  • Be delegated by the director or technical supervisor, is responsible for:

  • a. Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications

  • b. Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning

  • c. Provide orientation to testing personnel

  • d. Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel

  • e. Maintain required records to meet licensing and accrediting requirements of all appropriate regulatory agencies

  • Stay up-to-date on current regulations and technical / clinical information

  • a. Keep current with regulations related to his / her section of the laboratory and ensures compliance with them in a timely manner

  • b. Keep abreast of current advances related to his / her specialty and incorporates applicable information into the procedures of the section

  • c. Respond to actual / potential risk to patient / employee by taking action to correct, minimize, or prevent risk

  • Other:

  • Participate in Laboratory - wide team tasks as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Comply with hospital, department, and unit standards, including but not limited to safety, CPR, infection control, quality management, environmental, confidentiality, and patient care

  • Demonstrate competency in selected skills, including but not limited to:

  • a. Perform specimen analyses in assigned section of the Laboratory related to Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Immunochemistry, and/or Microbiology

  • b. Complete daily departmental CQI and preventive maintenance

  • c. Prepare reagents and coordinating department supplies as needed

  • d. Maintain records of results and department statistics

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regards to:

  • a. Attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality

  • b. Positive public relation image and working relationships

  • c. Obtain necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence.

  • d. Complete all mandatory requirements, including annual safety films, CPR, infection control and annual physical

  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department, and hospital goals including:

  • a. Attend and participate in team meetings

  • b. Volunteer or accept assignment of projects

  • c. Mission, vision and team ground rules

  • May function as Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor (if qualified under CLIA 88 Regulations, section 493) if designated by the Medical Director, Pathology

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Biology) 1 year ASCP approved Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist training program

  • Current California State Clinical Laboratory Scientist License

  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information

  • Effective interpersonal skills

  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years Clinical laboratory experience after completion of training program

  • 1 year hospital laboratory experience
