We are seeking a Clinical Data Abstractor who will be responsible for the review and abstraction of melanoma data from Providence Health & Services' electronic medical records system (EMRS) into a research database. The ideal candidate must be able to read medical reports in the EMRS, find required data, such as demographic, diagnostic, treatment and survival information, and enter data into the research database. The candidate will also help obtain complete follow-up data through direct patient contact, and in some instances, via contact with referring MDs.

The role will not supervise others, will report to the Manager, Data Management, and will work closely with JWCI physicians, data management, nurses, and other clinical research staff. The incumbent must have the experience to work with limited supervision.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Review and abstract data from medical records into a research database

  • Identify the appropriate demographic, diagnostic, treatment and survival information needed by reading and interpreting various reports from the medical records, including pathology reports, radiology reports, operative reports, clinic reports, etc.

  • Enter all data and performs edit checks for accuracy

  • Maintain current follow-up by contacting patients, their families or other contacts, physicians, tumor registries, searching DMV/SSDI records, etc.

  • Assist physicians and research fellows with data acquisition, clarification, and documentation for research projects/papers

  • Help identify clinical cases for tumor board presentation


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Coursework/Training in Cancer registrar

  • Two (2) years experience in reading/interpreting medical records and/or as a cancer registrar, or other relevant experience

  • Two (2) years proficient in medical terminology

  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information

  • Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Performs work independently with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills

  • Must have experience in reading/interpreting medical records and/or as a cancer registrar, and be proficient in understanding medical terminology

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree or at least 2-3 years’ experience in reading/interpreting medical records and/or as a cancer registrar, with proficiency in medical terminology

  • One (1) year knowledge of clinical research and ability to abstract information from medical records to support research endpoints
