Providence Histology Technical Specialist in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling a Histology Technical Specialist to the Histology Department at Providence Office Park in Portland, OR. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), day shift position.

We are seeking a Histology Technical Specialist that will work to continually improve and expand diagnostic services available to the Oregon Regional Pathology Department by facilitating collaborative relationships between the Regional Histology Department, and Regional Medical Directors and staff pathologists. The Histology Technical Specialist demonstrates technical and operational expertise across all aspects of the Regional Histology Department and provides intradepartmental oversight to the development of new methodologies and protocols. To be successful, the incumbent must possess an advanced understanding of histological techniques, including special staining and immunohistochemistry, as they pertain to patient diagnosis and treatment. This responsibility includes both 'working the bench' as well as administrative time for overseeing the technical activities.

The Histology Technical Specialist coordinates the development, validation, and implementation of new IHC assays as well as continual optimization of current protocols at the discretion of the medical director. The successful maintenance and optimization of these protocols requires rigorous troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and open communication with technical staff, vendors, and pathologists. In doing so, it is required that this position maintain an in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge of all instrumentation and methodologies to include tissue processing, routine embedding and microtomy, and additional testing and staining. Additionally, the Histology Technical Specialist maintains a current and thorough understanding of regulatory guidelines as they pertain to the development and maintenance of departmental protocols to include CAP and CLIA regulations to ensure Laboratory compliance. The Technical Specialist continually reviews, edits, and writes departmental policies. In this role, the incumbent works closely with the Regional Quality Department to ensure compliance with regional and local quality polices.

This position must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel as it pertains to department Quality and Productivity Dashboards. In doing so, the technical specialist works with the supervisor to track department metrics and identify performance goals.

All laboratory employees are expected to possess an understanding of the Providence Health and Services, and Oregon Regional Laboratory Services goals and strategies; including the Regional Laboratory Quality Policy.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties of a histotechnician, including but not limited to, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, and immunohistochemistry (IHC)as well as providing technical expertise to histotechnicians and lab assistants

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of instruments and equipment; troubleshoots equipment and instrument problems, including computer and interface issues

  • Develop new IHC assays through vendor selection, protocol optimization, and staining validation while retaining thorough records

  • Provide oversight of the technical activities of the department to include:

  • Daily workflow

  • Functions as a technical resource for the other bench staff

  • Instrumentation needs (QC, maintenance schedules, performance verification)

  • Assure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory agencies to assure IHC department is inspection ready at all time:

  • Appropriate and up-to-date departmental policies

  • Documentation is consistent with accreditation requirements (CAP, etc..)

  • Instrumentation installation and validation documentation

  • Maintain documentation of new staining protocols in compliance with regulatory agencies

  • Complete and maintains records of all departmental Proficiency Testing

  • Organize department competency and proficiencies for Lab Assistants and Histotechnicians on an annual basis as well as New Hires

  • Maintain departmental quality and productivity records through Excel Dashboards, and tracks trends/discrepancies

  • Assist in onboarding and training of new caregivers including lab assistants and histotechnicians while maintaining documentation

  • Assist in troubleshooting and documenting instrument problems as well as slide and stain problems

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of instruments and equipment; troubleshoots equipment and instrument problems, including computer and interface issues

  • Periodically review records of quality control, instrument logs, safety logs, etc., and keeps accurate documentation

  • Maintain reagent and supply inventories as needed or assigned

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, safety, and overall appearance of the lab

  • May perform timekeeping

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of instruments and equipment; troubleshoots equipment and instrument problems, including computer and interface issues

  • Act as a role model of Providence Health and Services Mission and Core Values

  • Assist Regional Histology Supervisor as appropriate or assigned


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in with HT (ASCP) -OR- HTL (ASCP)

  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in histotechnology in an equivalent high volume or acute care laboratory as well as a background in IHC
