St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Surgery Support Assistant - Operating Room-Main Hospital in Orange, California

We are looking for a Surgery Support Assistant for the Operating Room-Main Hospital Department at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location: Orange, CA

Work Schedule: On call / Per diem

Shift: 8-hour, Variable

Job Summary:

Under general direction, provides receptionist/clerical/secretarial support in area of assignment. Contributes to the realization of unit/department goals by serving/attending to customers (SJH patients, physicians, and hospital personnel) either through the telephone or computer, direct interface, or through records management.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as the key clerical contact person in the unit, answering inquiries of a general nature, relaying/sending messages in a timely manner, accurately collecting payments for services rendered, receiving documents/records, and distributing paperwork as needed.

  • Verifies or inputs data into computer accurately and/or prepares reports or schedules through any of the following software programs: JeTech, ESP, ESI, PICIS, MEDITECH, MSO, MSL ’65, etc.

  • Maintains and organizes accurate hospital/unit, patient/physician/staff records, schedules, charge sheets, etc. as directed.

  • Informs the Manager/Supervisor about customer issues or complaints in a timely manner. Follows up or provides appropriate feedback, as directed.

  • Ensures that daily operations of the unit or department are accomplished through established protocols.

  • Assists with maintenance of policies and procedures/reference manuals, bulletin boards, and other office files.

  • Coordinates and requisitions routine office supplies/equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.

  • Medical terminology and spelling.

  • Basic knowledge of math/problem solving skills.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Strong clerical/organization skills.

  • Excellent phone etiquette.

  • Strong interpersonal/customer relations skills.

  • Effective verbal/written communication skills.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to establish priorities based on customer needs.

  • Flexible, able to adapt to changing work schedule and workload.

  • Ability to understand physician’s instructions and able to follow through.

  • Preferred: Bilingual skills – English and Spanish for the receptionist and registrar roles.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience: Clerical or secretarial experience.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience:

  • One (1) year Hospital clerical experience.

  • Admitting and/or insurance billing experience in hospital or physician’s office.

  • Experience with specific peri-op, scheduling, and patient charging software/systems.
