St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Medical Laboratory Technician - Clinical Laboratory in Orange, California

Our team is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Clinical Laboratory at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange. This is a full time, 8-hour evening shift position for a total of 80 biweekly hours (must have weekend availability).
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Utilize professional knowledge, skills and judgment to perform a variety of waived and moderately complex laboratory tests as well as a variety of clerical, physical and quality assurance functions.
Work independently and serve as a resource, overseeing the work of the Senior Lab Assistants.
Maintain technical knowledge sufficient to respond to needs within the department.
Process patient specimens/blood products as needed for test ordered and follows through with problems and issues regarding quality of samples/blood products.
Perform patient testing analyses on waived and moderately complex testing excluding tests that require microscopic analysis.
Organize and prioritize work as appropriate to meet established turnaround times.
Perform and monitor quality control functions for waived and moderately complex tests and tests that do not require microscopic analysis. Respond to out of range results and takes appropriate action.
Review and evaluate waived and moderately complex tests results to determine accuracy and reasonableness utilizing delta checks, analyzer flags, etc. to determine discrepancies or problems with specimens. Either acts to resolve problem or refers problem to Clinical Laboratory Scientist, supervisor/designee or pathologist.
Accurately enters patient testing data and comments when necessary. Document corrections appropriately when needed.
Perform start-up, preventative maintenance, linearity & calibration, and calibration verification on instrumentation as necessary and appropriate.
Communicate with nursing or physicians as necessary to report critical values and testing delays as necessary and appropriate.
Oversee the work of the senior lab assistants as necessary and appropriate. Contribute to teaching/training and competency evaluations of staff.
Assist in ordering, stocking, cleaning, and other general maintenance activities.
Report all variances/discrepancies per laboratory Occurrence Management policy. Keep current with communications (i.e. reading emails, technical communications, new procedures). Completes own competencies and license requirements in a timely manner.
Qualifications and Skills needed for this role:
Associate degree or equivalent education/experience.
Current California State License for Medical Laboratory Technician.
Ability to interpret test results.
Ability to problem solve within scope of training.
Ability to perform intermediate computer functions.
Ability to interact with other healthcare staff members in a professional, courteous manner and demonstrate good communication / telephone skills.
Ability to understand and communicate in oral and written English.
Ability to follow directions regarding assigned tasks, dealing with priority tasks first, then completing remaining tasks within the established time frames.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and maintain a pace appropriate to the workload.
- At least one (1) year of experience working in a clinical laboratory.
