St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Chaplain - Spiritual Care in Orange, California

Our team is looking for a Chaplain to join our Spiritual Care team at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange. This is an on call/per diem position that will be providing coverage for primarily the day shift.
The Chaplain is responsible for ministering the religious/spiritual/emotional needs of patients, families and staff. The Chaplain demonstrates a professional and personal commitment to spiritual growth and is trained in hospital or institutional ministry. The Chaplain will be assigned areas of care with overlapping and complementary inpatient/outpatient and community responsibilities.
Provides timely inpatient/outpatient services to the patient and support network including but not limited to spiritual assessments, hospitality, representational witness, bio-ethical consultation, religious and spiritual ministry according to established standards and guidelines. Communicates promptly, clearly, and accurately to the healthcare team and other chaplains who will be involved about patient pastoral/spiritual care.
Identifies educational needs. Creates/coordinates meaningful in-service programs to educate the healthcare team and community about interface of religion and spirituality with medical care with input from the Director. Presents clear training/orientation for Eucharistic Ministers and new employees upon request. Informs Director of problems and ideas for improvement in a timely manner.
Provides timely and pertinent interdepartmental services offering full range of pastoral ministry to the total hospital community by active participation on the committees and creating/presiding/participating in liturgical events to help heal or celebrate the hospital community.
Participates in community outreach according to established standards and guidelines including but not limited to networking with religious leaders of all faith traditions to enhance a spirit of collaboration and cooperation between hospital and congregations: creates/facilitates support groups related to one's assignment, interests when appropriate, or as requested by the Director. Networks with patients' congregations, if requested, to help provide quality and continuity of spiritual care.
Documents spiritual care assessments and interventions and ongoing services in the medical records promptly and completely. Completes monthly activity reports on designated form as requested and within defined timelines.
Supports the department through attending/participating in department meetings and in-services. Assists with development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Contributes to and complies with the initiatives to continuously monitor and improve the quality and effectiveness of spiritual care services. Share in department coverage to meet patient spiritual care needs.
Offers post-discharge follow-up when appropriate through such avenues as bereavement phone calls, bereavement cards, presiding/attending memorial services.
Participates and contributes spiritual care perspective in patient rounds and patient care conferences. Presents current information, assists with and organizes conferences based on request or need.
Maintains knowledge of current trends in the field with ongoing education through literature, audio-visual aids, and attending conferences and retreats for professional growth and development. Shares information learned with staff.
Ability to deliver spiritual /pastoral care and support that is both personalized and focused.
Ability to conduct a multifaceted assessment of a patient.
Ability to participate in interdisciplinary conference and contribute significant data for comprehensive and holistic care/treatment plan.
Ability to help others explore options and empower them to identify and take the next step(s) toward spiritual fulfillment.
Ability to network with community clergy and congregations, providing continuum of spiritual and pastoral support within a variety of care context.
Ability to negotiate mutually acceptable outcomes among diverse viewpoints.
Ability to employ systems thinking and systems management (e.g. facilitating relationships, building partnerships, networking constituencies) toward more comprehensive, personalized and holistic outcomes for patients and staff.

- Master's Degree in Theology/Spirituality/Pastoral Ministry or related field (or equivalent experience).
- One (1) year of Pastoral experience.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
- Several years of Pastoral experience.
- Completed 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.
License / Certifications:
- National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) certification or in the process of obtaining certification, Board Certification.
