St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Associate Security Officer - Security in Orange, California

We are looking for an Associate Security Officer for the Security Department at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location: Orange, CA

Work Schedule: On Call/ Per Diem

Shift: 8-hour, Variable Shifts

Job Summary:

Perform specific Security functions such as completing daily activity logs, responding to emergency situations and preparing incident reports. Patrol the facilities and grounds effectively ensuring the safety of staff, visitors and patients. Investigate losses, vandalism, assaults, improper conduct, etc. Coordinate with law enforcement agencies, parking and traffic control, report unusual conditions.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures the safety of staff, visitors, and patients by periodically touring the hospital grounds in order to prevent or detect fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry and safety hazards.

  • Secures exterior and interior doors of the hospital in order to provide greater protection for all persons and property in the hospital.

  • Investigates losses, vandalism, assaults, fire, improper conduct, unidentifiable persons, by gathering all the facts; such as who, what, where, when, and how in order to prevent any further occurrence. Documenting in an Incident Report Form.

  • Assists nursing personnel in handling and controlling difficult patients in the Emergency Room, a Nursing Unit, or on the hospital campus demonstrating the appropriate use of force based on the age of the patient which could include adolescent (13-17 years), young adult (18-45 years), middle adult (46-60 years), and older adult (60+ years).

  • Coordinates parking and traffic control of visitors, employees and doctors in the hospital parking lots: personnel are in correct parking assignments with authorized permits, traffic lanes are not blocked, etc.

  • Provides access to hospital areas when required for medical and administration expediency or for employees whose duties require access to other areas after obtaining proper authorization.

  • Responds to critical incidents such as Code Reds, Code Yellows, Code Grays, Campus Intruders and takes appropriate action according to procedure.


  • Computer skills.

  • Ability to write legible, concise, comprehensive security reports using correct grammar and spelling.

  • Ability to read, interpret and explain policies and procedures.

  • Skill to exercise tact, understanding, self-restraint, judgment and confidentiality in dealing with people from various educational and socio-cultural backgrounds.

  • Understand and communicate clearly and effectively.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience: Security experience or experience in dealing with the public.

Licenses/Certifications: Current California BSIS Guard Card.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: Security Officer experience.

Licenses/Certifications: IAHSS Certification in Healthcare Security.
