Providence Health & Services Chief Nursing Officer - Southwest WA Service Area in Olympia, Washington



The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Southwest Washington Service Area provides leadership and guidance to Providence St. Peter Hospital (PSPH) and Providence Centralia Hospital with some nursing oversight with Providence Medical Group. The CNO will also be leading its affiliate and related Providence Health & Services (PH&S) entities on the patient care relationships between the organization, its management, employees, volunteers and medical staff. The incumbent is expected to provide administrative oversight to supervised departments though strategic planning and the annual budget processes, and the supervision of the directors and managers of these areas. The CNO will also serve as a member of senior management, while participating in respective committees, including the Southwest Administrative Team and the following PSPH leadership teams: Community Board, Quality and Credentials Committee, Executive Quality Council, Clinical Quality Committee, Management Team, Medical Executive Committee, Nursing Leadership Council, all the while, co-chairing the Regional Hospital Operations Committee. S/he will meet monthly with the PH&S CNO, and participate in related organization-wide CNO meetings.

The position is responsible for ensuring the financial, operational, quality, and strategic objectives for assigned departments. The CNO will oversee those aspects of the delivery of services to patients, ongoing efforts to improve those services, and to develop specific objectives for improving services. This position is designated as the Chief Nursing Officer for PSPH and PCH for regulatory purposes. The CNO’s partners will work at advancing the integration of nursing processes and protocols within the Southwest Region (SWR).

Above all else, the Chief Nursing Officer, Southwest Washington Service Area shall serve as a role model for behaviors expected of management.

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Southwest Washington Service Area will:

  • Supervise the following acute care departments: Acute Care Inpatient Services, including Women’s and Children’s Services, Orthopedic and Neurology Services, Medical/Renal/Oncology Services, Telemetry Services, Critical Care Services, Centralized Nursing Resources, Nursing Practice, IV/OIS Emergency Services, Care Management and Utilization Review.

  • Ensure optimal quality of patient care, service excellence, staff morale, and cooperation among nursing, interdisciplinary and medical staff. Coordinate the overall consistency of nursing practice at the hospital.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the organization, anticipating and responding to changing trends and expectations in patient service, nurse staffing and recruiting, and the nursing industry.

  • In collaboration with hospital leadership and medical staff, develop organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated, met, and patient outcomes improved.

  • Ensure the nursing staff is aligned with the goals and values of the organization, and follow prescribed methods to achieve success.

  • Provide moral leadership with integrity for the nursing team to follow the mission and values of Providence health & Services on a daily basis. Display a commitment to the Providence Code of Conduct in daily activities. Work with assigned areas to establish effective plans and programs for advancing the mission, goals, vision and values of the organization.

  • Immediately respond to patient and customer complaints from assigned areas by demonstrating the value of service excellence in resolving these issues.

  • Develop and implement programs to ensure that the highest levels of safety, professional accountability, and fiscal responsibility are maintained throughout assigned departments. Ensure the compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and State Hospital Standards.

  • Maintain a culture of close cooperation and partnership with the senior leaders and leadership teams. Serve as the patient care advocate in planning and problem solving with leaders from the governing body, leadership teams, medical staff, and hospital departments.

  • Maintain and protect confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care. Adhere to the organization’s confidentiality policy. Maintain patient and employer confidentiality.

  • In assigned areas, ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained and demonstrated in a timely manner and that competence is improved continually. Develop staff through coaching, cross-training, and by providing opportunities to improve or enhance job skills.

  • Monitor employee relations and communication and regularly assess employee expectations and satisfaction in assigned areas. Follow through on problems that may compromise effective performance.

  • Maintain positive working relationships and foster cooperative work environment. Adhere to the organization’s HR policies, and work with HR to ensure that contracts with labor organizations are administered appropriately.

  • Develop an organizational culture committed to cost reduction and responsible stewardship of resources without compromising quality of care or service excellence.

  • Ensure the overall financial performance of assigned areas, including capital needs, operating budgets and productivity expectations. Ensure a proactive response to changing circumstances affecting the organization’s financial position.

  • Collaborate with medical staff and senor leaders to analyze the changes under healthcare reform and develop solutions to integrate those changes without compromising quality patient care or services.

  • Support the medical staff in its governance functions as it relates to Medical Staff committees and activities specifically in assigned areas.

  • Develop specific objectives for improving delivery in assigned areas through analysis of patient satisfaction surveys and performance improvement measures and report this information to the senior leaders.

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, adjusting personal style to meet the needs of individuals.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the incident command system. Demonstrate the ability to assume a leadership role in the event of a disaster.

Required experience/qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing OR Master's Degree in Health Administration or Business Administration and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field. Ph.D. in Nursing or equivalent education/experience preferred.

  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in nursing management, five (5) years at the administrative level.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of health care management including governance, medical staff relationships, quality systems, finance, planning/marketing, human resources, and regulatory/legal issues.

  • A solid, recent track record of achievement in leading significant change processes in a healthcare organization.

  • The ability to be a strong, self-motivated executive who can measure, evaluate, act and achieve targeted results.

  • Demonstrated skills in team-building, problem-solving, decision-making, innovation, and effective management or change.

  • A commitment to participative decision making at all levels, to appropriate delegation of authority, and to accountability within a matrixed health system.

  • An unencumbered and current RN License for the state of Washington.
