St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Associate Patient Access Representative - Registration in Napa, California

We are looking for an Associate Patient Access Representative with the ED Registration Department at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

Location: Napa, CA

Schedule: On Call / Per Diem

Shift: 8-hour, Days (Variable)

Job Summary:

Performs all registration functions for patients. This includes collecting accurate demographic information, verifying insurance benefits and eligibility, obtaining authorization/pre-certification for services provided, and collecting patient liability prior to or at the time of service. Greets and serves patients in a professional, friendly, and respectful manner to promote sacred encounters. Performs duties under moderate supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Registers patient in a timely manner. Verifies patient insurance using automated tool; reads and understands responses from automated insurance verification tool and takes appropriate action, including referrals to Patient Access Coordinators or Financial Counselors, as appropriate.

  • Obtains and documents complete patient demographic, financial and clinical data in Meditech.

  • Contacts physician offices to obtain missing insurance information which can include policy number, group number, date of birth and insurance phone number.

  • Ensures insurance card, orders and any other forms are copied as needed.

  • Ensures patient handouts are presented and explained at time of registration (Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Important Patient Information, etc.).

  • Obtains necessary signatures on required forms and consents (COA, Medicare notification letters, etc.).

  • Collects patient's estimated liability prior to or at time of service; makes referrals to Financial Counselor or Patient Access Coordinator as appropriate.

  • Understands and strictly follows all policies related to handling of monies.

  • Escorts patients to appropriate department.

  • Answers simple patient inquiries via phone or in person and routes to appropriate department.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated typing and basic computer skills, including Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to cordially, professionally and effectively interact with patients, family members, physicians and other Medical Center personnel in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff and clinical departments, and work in a team environment.

  • Typing and basic computer skills to include: Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office programs.

  • Ability to handle cash and credit/debit card transactions, including collecting and refunding payments to patients/families/employees/customers and balancing cash drawer at end of each shift.

  • Ability to problem solve independently.

  • Strong clerical and organizational skills.

  • Ability to interact with upset clients and behave in a professional manner.

  • Ability to maintain organizational, employee and patient confidentiality at all times.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and third party requirements.

  • Preferred: Bilingual (English and Spanish).

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • Coursework/Training - Completion of a medical terminology class or ROP or 2 years of experience that demonstrates knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 coding.

  • Coursework/Training - Successful completion of the Patient Access Training modules within 90 days of obtaining position.

Experience: 1 year experience in a healthcare or customer service setting with proven customer service skills.
