St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Respiratory Care Practitioner (Full-time) in Mission Viejo, California

We are looking for a Respiratory Care Practitioner with Respiratory Care Services - MV at Mission Hospital.

Location: Mission Viejo, CA

Schedule: Full Time - 72 biweekly hours

Shift: 12-hour Nights

Job Summary:

Under general supervision of Respiratory Care Leadership and according to physician order, provides respiratory care treatment and diagnostic services within the guidelines of the Respiratory Care Services department Policy and Procedure Manual. Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) duties as applied in general clinical care areas, critical/intensive care (i.e. CICU, SICU, and IICU), Emergency Department, Trauma, Perioperative, Labor and Delivery, and other care areas as required. The RCP Position requires clinical assessment skills, ability to make appropriate clinical decisions, provide respiratory treatment and care for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. The RCP performs all duties of blood gas analysis including stick, draw, analysis and reporting.

  1. Provides technical consultation to physicians in the assessment and evaluation of patients with serious respiratory problems to provide alternative modalities of care. Demonstrates the application of respiratory equipment and techniques to respiratory care, medical and nursing personnel.

  2. Administers complex therapies, such as Inhaled Nitric Oxide (INO therapy), Bi-vent/APRV and Chest Physiotherapy, Preforms non diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies, performs Non-Bronchoscopic mini-BAL procedures to provide a non-bronchoscopic method of attaining a sample of bronchoalveolar fluid in the mechanically ventilated patient for the diagnosis of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). Experienced with EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) bronchoscopy.

  • Participates in selected committees, coordinates patient, staff, and/or student education resulting in effective respiratory/pulmonary outcomes.

  • Uses independent judgment and critical thinking to make pertinent clinical decisions.

  • Demonstrates self-motivation, the ability to prioritize tasks, and be capable of independent judgment with regards to evaluation of patient acuity and patient care needs.

  • Improving Performance and Quality of Practice:

  • Engaged in RCS Department goals and quality programs.

  • Collects, complies, and/or reports data to assure accurate documentation of established and ongoing continuous quality management programs.

  • Work results in minimal Quality Control deficiencies.

  • Service and Advocacy:

  • Understand chain of command and proactively problem solve.

  • Follow-up on problems and appropriately communicate status of unresolved issues with multiple disciplines involved in care of patient.

  • Advocates on behalf of all parties with the intent of maintaining a collaborative environment and obtaining positive resolution to conflict.

Position Requirements:


  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • Associate's Degree As of 12/31/2018.


  • One (1) year RCP critical care experience

  • Experienced with EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) bronchoscopy.


  • Valid unencumbered state of California Respiratory Care Practitioner License.

  • National Board for Respiratory Care credentialed CRT (entry level). GRANDFATHER CLAUSE: A grandfather clause is an exemption that allows persons to continue with activities or operations that were approved before the implementation of new rules or regulations.

  • National Board for Respiratory Care credentialed RRT (advanced level). NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) GRANDFATHER CLAUSE (Only for Current Mission Hospital Employees). A grandfather clause is an exemption that allows persons to continue with activities or operations that were approved before the implementation of new rules or regulations.

  • NBRC Credentials (CRTT, CRT), (RRT as of 1/1/15).

  • ACLS from American Heart Association.

  • PALS from American Heart Association.

  • BLS from American Heart Association.

Preferred Position Qualifications:


  • Two (2) years RCP critical care experience


  • NBRC Credentials: ACCS, NPS, CPFT, RPFT, SDS.

  • Instructor provider: ACLS, PALS, NRP, BLS.
