St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Operating Room Assistant - Mission Ambulatory Surgery Center in Mission Viejo, California

We are looking for an Operating Room Assistant for the Surgicenter Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Location Mission Viejo, CA

Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of the Lead Support Technician and the general direction of the Clinical Coordinator or Charge Nurse, the Support Tech provides ancillary services in the Operating Room. The three major responsibilities consist of the following: 1) ensuring the availability of well-functioning equipment for every surgical case, 2) assisting nursing personnel in room set up & turnover and in selected patient support services such as turning, lifting, and transporting patients, and 3) maintaining a safe and clean work environment in the O.R. suites and peripheral areas.

Essential Functions:

  • Room preparation/set up: Assists in room set-up according to case requirements. Prepares & delivers equipment in the O.R. suites as basis the surgery schedule & doctor's preference card.

  • Materials/supply stocking: Restocks OR cabinet as needed. Maintains stock of supplies such as paper towels, plastic bags, scrub sponges, sharp containers, glove, etc. in scrub sink areas, sub sterile rooms, rest rooms.

  • Equipment/instrument/tools maintenance: Maintains/cleans camera system, A-V carts, tank room, specialty carts, all equipment including cables and foot pedals, CUSA, microscopes, lead aprons, autoclave, etc. Changes all gas cylinder tanks on equipment carts to ensure adequate amount of gas for a full surgical procedure. Maintains wet vac, mop buckets, supply carts and other equipment. Puts away equipment not in use and left in halls, i.e. specialty carts, gurneys/lifters, case cart, electrosurgical units, empty tables and tourniquets, etc. As directed, tags malfunctioning equipment and immediately reports condition to Lead Support Tech.

  • Nursing Assistance: Assists the nurses and charge nurses with patient needs. Assists nurses in putting patients on OR beds. Removes gurney from room. Assists in OR turnover. Copies top page of the preference sheet for the circulating nurse. Answers interdepartmental page in or outside of room assignment promptly.

  • Maintenance of work environment: Cleans OR suites in-between cases and at the end of the last case of the day. Collects, transports/removes soiled linen, medical waste and non-regulated waste. Sanitizes surfaces (surgical table, overhead lights, charts, carts, kick buckets, etc.) with correctly prepared chemicals. Cleans surgical equipment such as infusion pumps, limb holders and specialty carts upon removal from the OR suite and before taking to the OR suite. Sanitizes floor using wet mop method. Maintains/monitors surgeons' and nurses' restrooms and lounge areas (furniture, sinks, carpets, defrosting refrigerators, etc.) Throws trash and cleans areas, as needed. Reports safety and repair issues in a timely manner to Lead Technician.

  • Transportation Services: Pick-ups/transports patients ready for surgery at the request of the Charge Nurse, when transporter is not available.

  • Transport non-controlled medications from one licensed health care professional to another when needed for a case.


  • Able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Baseline aseptic technique.

  • Baseline infection control and universal precautions.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment/instrumentation.

  • Able to set priorities, adapts to changing conditions and frequent interruptions.

  • Able to communicate tactfully and effectively with peers, supervisor, and other patient care givers.

  • Able to handle heavy equipment [push/pull] and use various types of cleaning equipment.

  • Able to assist in turn around time between cases, and to transfer patients.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Licenses/Certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
