We are looking for a Nurse Educator for the Professional Education Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly Hours
Shift: 8-hour, Days
The Nurse Educator is a professional nurse with advanced clinical, leadership, and staff development knowledge and skills. Supports the professional and clinical development of the bedside nurse and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence in the delivery of evidence based nursing care. Facilitates the educational process through assessment of learning needs; and development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and activities, in collaboration with multidisciplinary care teams. Facilitates all levels of competency validation, from orientation through advanced. Collaborates with leadership to ensure regulatory compliance with respect to clinical practice through education and competency validation. Participates in strategic planning to achieve outcomes. Leads groups working on projects related to staff development. Acts as a consultant to committees and teams; and makes recommendations for improving the quality of patient care through the development and revision of policies, procedures, and programs. Supports the integration of research into practice. Is a resource and mentor to staff.
Assesses nursing and ancillary staff learning needs using formal and informal methods starting at hire and continuing on an on-going basis. Uses a proactive approach in identifying learning needs. Analyzes findings from multiple data sources including surveys, direct observation of practice, and outcomes data to determine priorities that are consistent with regulatory requirements; safety; quality; strategic plans; and organizational mission, vision, and values.
Plans education curricula that benefits clinicians at all stages in their career development in and addresses the psychosocial, cultural, developmental, and age-related needs of the populations served in collaboration with key stakeholders; ensuring regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements are included. Selects education methodologies, and instructional equipment, space, and resources that maximize efficiency and effectiveness of education, and reflect good stewardship.
Designs learning experiences consistent with evidence based principles, including adult learning theory. Formulates pertinent, measurable, learner-focused objectives that are at the appropriate level. Creates effective educational materials. Demonstrates proficiency in designing innovative skills training, simulation, in-service, classroom, and online activities with an emphasis on experiential learning, self-reflection, and the development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.
Implements education to meet house-wide and department specific needs; demonstrating competence in conducting skills training, simulation, in-service education, workshops, classes, conferences and online learning. Fosters the cognitive, psychomotor and affective development of learners. Uses formative assessments to guide the teaching-learning process.
Manages orientation of new staff in assigned areas by developing, updating, and providing educational resources; facilitating educational experiences; monitoring employee progress; and problem solving to enhance successful transition to the registered nurse role and completion of orientation.
Evaluates the outcomes of education provided using subjective and objective measures such as direct observation of practice, written tests, case studies, surveys, documentation, and clinical outcomes measures. Revises education as needed based on findings. Uses appropriate change theories and strategies when revising education curricula. Reports achievements and opportunities to leadership.
Leads competency validation processes by collaborating with key stakeholders to determine priority competencies and ensure regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements are met. Creates measurable performance based criteria for skills competencies. Uses evidence based item writing and test construction principles to validate knowledge based competencies. Facilitates the implementation of competency validations of both new staff during their orientation and continuing staff on an on-going basis; addressing competency needs at all levels of nursing practice. Develops and implements remediation plans to be used when staff do not meet criteria. Reports competency completion concerns and recommends plans of action to department Directors and Managers.
Uses information technology to communicate educational activities and accomplishments to stakeholders, provide education to staff, and maintain documentation of education and competency validations in a way that is consistent with policy and regulatory expectations. Ensures that education information, records, and reports are easily accessible to staff, members of the leadership team, regulatory bodies, and accrediting agencies; as appropriate.
Participates in leadership by facilitating organizational change for performance improvement through the following:
Strategic planning at the regional, hospital, and department level by participating on councils, committees, or task forces to share data and information, and recommend actions in support of organization and department goals.
Consulting on healthcare education, leadership, and nursing clinical practice during the development of policies, procedures, and programs.
Collaborating within a multidisciplinary framework to identify opportunities by analyzing leadership, education, and clinical practices and outcomes; and suggesting performance improvement activities.
Supporting the integration of research into clinical practice with participation in research, evidence based practice projects, literature reviews, dissemination of information, and translation to practice through training.
Writing and presenting proposals for initiatives including research, resource acquisition, program development, and policy development.
Mentoring and supporting colleagues; including educators, managers, preceptors, charge nurses; and direct care nurses seeking advancement.
Using effective communication and group process skills to assist in solving problems and managing conflict.
Takes accountability for own growth, and role models life-long learning and excellence by identifying own learning needs, formulating professional goals, and participating in professional development and scholarly activities to maintain and improve own expertise in the areas of education, nursing clinical practice, and leadership.
Knowledge of nursing process, regulatory and professional standards of practice, adult learning principles and theory, and stages of development in order to evaluate and revise delivery of care systems; research and create standards of practice; and develop and conduct educational programs.
Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct on complex theoretical and technical concepts to all levels of personnel, respond to clinical issues, collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and resolve conflicts effectively.
Analytical skills necessary to develop, recommend, and implement systems and activities that improve delivery of care.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to eighty percent of work time.
Demonstrates the ability to meet behavioral competencies as indicated on the position specific competency assessment.
Knowledge of CMS regulations, Joint Commission requirements, and Magnet standards as they relate to area of specialization.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Education: Master's Degree in Nursing; or degree in progress to be completed within 2 years.
Experience: 3 years clinical experience in area(s) of specialization.
Current California Registered Nurse license.
BCLS Instructor certification within 6 months of hire.
ACLS, PALS, and NRP instructor certification may be required dependent on area of responsibility.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Education: Master's Degree in Nursing Education
1 year Staff development experience.
Experience with simulation in healthcare.
Experience with interactive, case-based online teaching/learning methods.
Experience with both knowledge and skills based competency validation.
Experience with outcomes measurement to evaluate effectiveness of education.
Licenses/Certifications: Certification in clinical specialty, Nursing Professional Development, or Nursing Education.
