St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Associate Chaplain - Spiritual Care in Mission Viejo, California

We are looking for an Associate Chaplain with the Spiritual Care department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Location: Mission Viejo / Laguna Beach, California

Work Schedule: On Call / Per Diem / Weekends

Shift: Primarily Evenings (Variable)

*Call requirement - Must be able to be onsite within 30 minutes if on call. This is for both locations - Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, California

Job Summary:

The on-call chaplain is contacted for traumas, deaths, and spiritual care emergencies by the nursing supervisor during the hours when staff chaplains are no longer on duty (this allows for 24 hour, 7-day/week coverage). The on-call chaplain provides professional and competent pastoral ministry to patients, families, staff, volunteers, and physicians. The on-call chaplain consistently demonstrates behaviors that model the St. Joseph Health System core values and the Hospital's mission statement, and strives to embody the motto of the St. Joseph Health System: "Helping to Heal All We Touch."

Essential Functions:

  • Provides spiritual care when contacted within the established time frame for traumas, deaths, and pastoral emergencies when staff chaplains are not on duty. Interventions are based on assessment and identified pastoral need. Demonstrates the ability to assess/meet psychosocial and developmental age-related needs of the specific population served. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic, unit, department specific) as indicated on the Competency Inventory.

  • Communicates promptly, clearly, and accurately to the healthcare team and other chaplains who follow about patient spiritual care needs conveying a positive team approach. Demonstrates the ability to assess/meet psychosocial and developmental age-related needs of the specific population served. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic, unit, department specific) as indicated on the Competency Inventory.

  • Documents spiritual care assessments and interventions in the medical record promptly and completely. Completes the designated on-call chaplain forms, monthly activity reports and other requested record-keeping projects according to defined timelines. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic, unit, department specific) as indicated on the Competency Inventory.

  • Supports the department through attending/participating in department meetings and inservices. Assists with the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Contributes to and complies with the initiatives to continually monitor and improve the quality and effectiveness of spiritual care services. Collaborates and coordinates on-call scheduling with other on-call chaplains with input form director. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic, unit, department specific) as indicated on the Competency Inventory.

  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in the field with ongoing education through literature, audiovisual aides, attending conferences, and retreats for professional growth and development. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic, unit, department specific) as indicated on the Competency Inventory.

  • Other specific competencies that have been identified by the manager related to changes in departmental operations or that focus on current clinical practices and are listed on the Supplemental Competence Validation Summary.

  • Proven pastoral ministry skills.

  • Proficient in required competencies upon completion of orientation, as listed on the department specific competency inventory.

  • Preferred: Bilingual ability.

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Two (2) Clinical Pastoral Education units in a program recognized by ACPE (Association of Clinical Pastoral Education); additional CPE units preferred.

  • Training in theology/pastoral ministry.

Experience:

  • One (1) year Spiritual care experience.
