We are looking for a Sterile Processing Technician for the Instrument Room Department at Covenant Health.

Work Schedule: Part time - 2 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days (Variable)

Job Summary:

The Sterile Processing Technician performs routine work in the decontamination, assembly, testing, and instruments in a medical facility, under the supervision of the Supervisor of Sterile Processing. This is the first level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the higher levels by the absence of responsibility for performing advanced and complicated sterilization, assembly and testing of medical equipment, supplies and instruments. Employees in this level may be in training to perform Sterile Processing Technician II duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Use knowledge of sterilization and infection control principles to properly decontaminate instrumentation and equipment per manufacturer’s written instructions. Maintains Quality Patient Centered Support Service Standards.

  • Appropriately operate equipment including, but not limited to, cart washers, washer disinfectors, computers, ultrasonic, scanners, telephones, and photocopiers.

  • Performs routine instrument and equipment quality checks. Trained to assemble instrument Peel Packs. Store, maintain and distribute sterilized instruments according to best practice, policy, and surgeon preference cards.

  • Assists with orientation of staff, both new, and those in assignment rotation. Acts as a liaison between Sterile Processing and the operating rooms.

  • Maintains a clean and neat work area.

  • Practices instrument care and handling.


  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicates clearly and appropriately.

  • Ability to operate computers and job related equipment.

  • Good Interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and documented competence in worker safety as it relates to medical device processing and sterilization.

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • Coursework/Training - Vocational training in Sterile Processing, decontamination/sterilization procedures, supply distribution or equivalent educ/experience

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - Sterile Processing class, training, or vocational education.

Licenses/Certifications: National Certification - CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
