St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Senior Chaplain in Lubbock, Texas

Covenant Health is seeking a full time Senior Chaplain with the Pastoral Care Ministry at Covenant Medical Center.

Job Summary:

With minimal supervision, provides advanced professional and competent spiritual care ministry and is responsible for serving the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of others in a variety of settings. The Chaplain provides a holistic approach to improve the health and quality of life to patients, their loved-ones, and in the community they serve.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides pastoral care to patients, families, and hospital staff through spiritual assessments, hospitality, and religious and spiritual ministry according to established standards and guidelines.

  • Provides, or arranges for, the sacramental needs of patients, their families, and hospital staff as assigned or commissioned.

  • Participates, where possible, in interdisciplinary team meetings at specific units to provide spiritual and emotional input into patient care plans.

  • Creates or coordinates in-service education to the healthcare team and community regarding religion, spirituality and medical care.

  • Creates and facilitates community education events (workshops, conferences, support groups, etc.) related to one’s congregational affiliation.

  • Documents spiritual care assessments, interventions and on-going services in the medical records within the same day the service was provided.

  • Supports the department through attending/participating in department meetings, in-services, memorial/ecumenical services and team building activities/events.

  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in the field with on-going education through literature, audio-visual and web conferences, retreats, etc., for professional growth and shares information learned from these forums.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education :

  • Master's Degree in Theology or Divinity

  • Coursework/Training - 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent educ/experience

Experience: 3 years experience in a hospital setting

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Jewish Chaplains or the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education or comparable association for professional ministry.

  • Endorsement of one’s Ecclesial Authority.

  • Complete advanced training or certification over and above education required for certification by NACC, APC, NAJC or ACPE in two additional areas. Examples:

  • Ethics

  • End of life care

  • Specialty areas of patient care (e.g., Palliative, OB, Pain Management)

  • Bereavement

  • Spiritual Direction

  • Geriatrics
