St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Nurse Educator - Cardiac Cath Lab and Electrophysiology in Lubbock, Texas

Covenant Health is seeking a full time Nurse Educator with the Cath Lab and Cardiac Service Line at Covenant Medical Center.

Job Summary :

Determines the learning needs of the Cardiac Services employees, physicians, and community. Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates learning activities. Teaches classes, and facilitates courses offered by content experts as needs arise. Coordinates activities of Chest Pain Center. Minimal supervision required.

Essential Functions:

  • ASSESS:

  • Assesses educational needs through observation of performance, interviews, surveys, quality data, literature reviews, special requests, new products/services, changes in technology, and other means.

  • PLAN:

  • Establishes priorities and develops educational activities using a variety of teaching/learning strategies. Incorporates Knipling Training and Development programs, outside sources, online opportunities, simulation lab experiences, as well as live teaching/coaching experiences in the planning. Develops programs for multidisciplinary audiences according to principles of adult learning. Plans methods of evaluating effectiveness of programs.

  • PLAN:

  • Identifies and recommends protocols and guidelines for best practice treatment of cardiac patients across the continuum of care.

  • IMPLEMENT:

  • Processes all new employees through departmental orientation, supporting the preceptors and assisting with evaluation of their progress. Provides training for Point-of-Care testing, safety programs and other in-services and competencies. Coordinates staff scheduling and teaching with Knipling, other educators and committees. Tracks and schedules ACLS, BLS, and PALS for all departments.

  • IMPLEMENT:

  • Educates nursing, and ancillary staff from all relevant departments and regional audiences on best practices in treatment of ACS and AMI patients. Assists Medical Directors in educating physicians on best practice in ACS. Educates new employees on Chest Pain Center accreditation, and related mission and vision. Educates community groups on heart disease, signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndrome and importance of calling 911. Serves as Chest Pain Coordinator. Collects data for Chest Pain Center. Forms relationships with other regional chest pain centers.

  • LEAD:

  • Assumes leadership role in developing comprehensive, accredited educational programs and symposia. Promotes credentialing through teaching, tutoring, networking and counseling activities, as well as providing independent study guide resources and proctoring.

  • COLLABORATE:

  • Works closely with Medical Directors and Emergency Medical Services to assure continuity of care and improved outcomes for ACS patients, from pre-hospital to hospital. Works closely with quality management personnel to assure that metrics are in place to show continuous improvement in the care of the ACS patient. Assists in the development of strategic plans for the growth of Cardiac Services. Actively serves on hospital committees such as Covenant Makers Education Council, as well as regional committees such as BRAC. Assists with cardiac research activities as appropriate.

  • ADMINISTRATE:

  • Maintains educational files on all employees within the department and reports educational needs and activities to other Managers and Director, including trends and aggregate reports

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education :

  • Graduate of an accredited professional school of nursing

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Minimum of 8 hours continuing education per year related to educational process or process improvement

  • On-going continuing education in area related to specialty

Experience:

  • 3 years Clinical experience.

  • 2 years Cath Lab experience.

  • 1 year Teaching experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possesses current license or temporary permit to practice professional nursing from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.

  • CPR Instructor.

  • ACLS Instructor.

  • Membership in Society of Chest Pain Centers

  • Membership in professional organization that addresses diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndrome patients

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree in Nursing, Education, or Healthcare related field

Experience: Experience in leadership role

Licenses and Certifications: RCIS Registry
