Job Summary: Under the medical supervision of the Supervising Physician, the Certified Nurse Midwife functions and works as a part of a team and provides optimal direct patient care services specializing in obstetric and gynecologic care with age-specific care standards and scope of practice. The Certified Nurse Midwife provides counseling and education for patients, their families, and the community. If required by the practitioner site, the Certified Nurse Midwife provides on-call coverage to assigned clinics/units, in rotation with other clinic providers, during hours when clinic is not open to the public in accordance with clinic policy. Accountable to the Area Director of Operations/Department Manager and the Director of the Midwifery Program for non-medical related issues and performance of goals and the Medical Director for all medical related issues.
Minimum Position Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from a Masters level education program required.
Requires two (2) years as a midwife in an outpatient or hospital setting.
Two (2) years documented experience providing midwifery services in the Antenatal, intrapartum,
postpartum and Well Women’s health or completion of 100 deliveries required.
Required to meet the requirements of the medical staff of the hospital where the midwife is seeking privileges to hire.
Certification maintenance required by the American Midwifery Certification Board.
Current California RN license
Current California CNM license
Current California Furnishing license
Current Basic Life Support
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Experience: Three (3) plus years as a midwife in an outpatient or hospital setting highly desirable.
Computer Skills: AEMR, IDX and Allscripts experience a plus.
Other: Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills preferred.

Assumes responsibility for seeking continuing education and updating skills and knowledge base.
Provides safe, comprehensive antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and well-women gynecologic care within the framework of approved policies and procedures; standards as set forth by the American College of Nurse Midwives; and the nurse-midwives individual training and experience.
Recognizes deviations from normal pregnancy or wellness, beginning the process of making a differential diagnosis. Consults with the physician regarding a management plan, carries out the management plan independently. Co-manages with the physician or transfers the patient to physician care based on thorough assessment of patient status.
Performs initial assessment of newborn status; assists in the establishment of airway and maintenance of body temperature; begins resuscitative efforts in the absence of a physician.
Coordinates and ensures timely completion of client follow-up and indicated referrals.
Orders and/or performs approved laboratory and diagnostic exams; reviews and manages abnormal results.
Orders medication per midwifery protocols; documents medications and related education in the medical record.
Initiates and carries out midwifery and medical interventions, such as but not limited to labor support of women and their families during labor, amniotomy, catheterization, insertion of internal monitors, episiotomy, and local anesthesia.
Maintains efficient patient flow and records management in accordance with clinic standards
Documents care provided in medical record; documentation is legible and complete.
Proactively troubleshoots complex problems utilizing knowledge of community standards, experience and sound judgment. Serves as a liaison between staff, patients, physicians and other hospital departments.
Mentors, directs and/or supervises other health professionals and/or students (ancillary staff, nursing, or Advanced Practice Nurses). Coordinates professional development opportunities for staff by modeling professional behavior, leading team building activities and ensuring resources and systems are in place to support the training and continuous learning of staff.
Participates in clinic/unit staff meetings and conferences.
