St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Associate Medical Assistant in Fortuna, California

We are looking for an Associate Medical Assistant with the SJH Rural Health Clinic at Redwood Memorial Hospital.

Location: Fortuna, CA

Schedule: Full Time - 80 bi-weekly hours

Shift: 10-hour Days

Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Department Manager, the Associate Medical Assistant of the St. Joseph Health Rural Health Clinic is responsible to assist the physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner in providing patient care while demonstrating our core values. Basic patient care needs will be met through both administrative and clinical duties. The Associate Medical assistant will function within the appropriate scope of practice and is expected to perform in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.


  • Obtain and update medical records of scheduledpatients.

  • Obtain and record vital signs and other appropriateinformation, such as height, weight, presenting problem, and other medicalinformation.

  • Ensure confirmation of patient identity with eachpatient encounter.

  • Provides MAadministrative and clinical support required to deliver quality patient carevia a telehealth or virtual visit platform as an extension of in-clinicservices and patient care strategy

  • Maintain office equipmentand supplies.

  • Document all interactions in patient's medicalrecord.

  • Under the delegation of a licensed practitioner,assist or perform point of care tests and clinical procedures as appropriate toscope of role and certification.

  • Reinforce patient education, materials, and labresults (normal); return phone messages; all as directed by the licensedpractitioner.

  • Perform administrative and/or clerical supportduties for practitioner, other medical assistants, or clinic/location asdirected. (ex: pre-authorizations, schedule appointments, referrals, clinicinventory and/or outdated medications/supplies, etc.)

  • Works in a safe manner, adhering to general safetyprecautions and standards. Reports any unsafe conditions to their supervisorand/or the safety hotline.

  • Actively participate in continuing education andclinic/location staff meetings and/or trainings.

  • Assists with emergencies as needed under thedirection of a licensed practitioner.

  • Maintains compliance with allOSHA and RHC regulatory guidelines.

  • Demonstrates compliance with all hospital and department policiesand procedures. Maintains compliancewith annual safety and competency testing.

  • Performsother duties as assigned.


  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary toprovide care appropriate to the age of the patients served including knowledgeof the principles of growth and development and psychosocial characteristicsand interventions for age specific requirement of the assigned unit.

  • Demonstrates the ability to assess and interpretage appropriate data about the patient’s status in order to identifyage-specific needs and provide the care needed.

  • Demonstratesage appropriate communication skills for the patient population served and knowledgeof age-specific community resources.


Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with complete confidentiality and security. Need to maintain all practices to protect PHI and follow HIPAA guidelines.


  • Cooperatesfully in all risk management activities and investigations .

  • Helpsto provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by takingappropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situationseffectively. Practices personal safetystandards.

  • Is knowledgeable of, observes andcomplies with hospital/ambulatory Codes of Safe Practice, safety policies andemergency procedures.

MinimumPosition Qualifications:

  • Education:

High school graduate or certified equivalency (GED) is required.

  • Experience:

Six months of medical assisting experience in a clinic setting preferred

  • ComputerSkills:

Ability to create, apply and manipulate data and information in Excel and Microsoft Word.

  • License / Certification:

Current BLS (CPR) card – must be AHA accredited. Certificate of completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited school or course preferred.

  • Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Musthave current knowledge and abilities to effectively apply principle skills.

  • Havestrong interpersonal and organizational skills to achieve desired goals and tointeract effectively with management and non-management personnel and physiciangroups.

  • Maintainsa positive attitude with changing conditions.

  • Abilityto work in a fast-paced department and handle multiple tasks, work withinterruptions, and deal effectively with confidential information.

  • Demonstrates dependability.

  • Requires excellent writing skills.

  • Musthave a professional and mature demeanor.

  • Abilityto work effectively under pressure by prioritizing work activities andre-negotiating deadlines.

Must have the ability to function independently, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

PreferredPosition Qualifications:

  • Education :

AA Degree or College Degree in related field highly preferred.

  • Experience: Experienced in an ambulatory care setting preferred.

  • Computer Skills: IDX, EHealthline, MediTech, EMR and Allscripts, Epic experiencehighly desirable.

  • Other : BilingualEnglish/Spanish communication skills.
