St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Lead Lab Assistant in Eureka, California

We are looking for a Lead Lab Assistant - NUHW (National Union of Healthcare Workers) with the Clinical Laboratory at St. Joseph Hospital Eureka.

Location: Eureka, CA

Schedule: Full Time - 80 biweekly hours

Shift: 10-hour Days

Job Summary:

Under the administrative supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services and Technical Laboratory Manager, the Lead Lab Assistant is responsible for day-to-day oversight of pre-analytic processes and phlebotomy staff. Clinical responsibilities account for 50% or more of worked hours.

Staff members who treat patients of a specific age group must be aware of the requirements specific to that population. The specific information and skills related to the position presented in this job description will be related to the following age group populations: infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Essential Functions:

  • Specimen Collection: Assists in the establishment of policies and procedures for collecting specimens. Is competent in safe specimen collection in both inpatient and outpatient settings of the hospital for all age groups including infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Adjusts volume of blood taken and needle size based on age of patient. Identifies patients correctly 100% of the time.

  • Specimen Processing: Processes blood, urine and other samples in preparation for analysis within the hospital lab or send out to a reference lab. Identifies patients correctly 100% of the time.

  • Information Services: Inputs and retrieves patient data and order into Information System(s).

  • Human Resource Management:

  • Participates in interviewing and hiring of qualified staff. Helps to coordinate orientation of new personnel and monitors performance to established departmental standards.

  • Monitors staff performance consistently and fairly to department and SJHS standards. Coaches staff on issues requiring immediate attention.

  • Demonstrates leadership ability by facilitating individual and team development.

  • Provides input for annual performance appraisals.

  • Assists with development and review of department policies and procedures.

  • Staffing and Productivity:

  • Develops and/or maintains staff schedule while monitoring staff productivity and adjusting resources as appropriate.

  • Provides input to department Director for improvements in staffing productivity and employee satisfaction.

  • Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities and assignments in an efficient manner.

  • Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation. Actively participates in new employee orientation as appropriate.

  • QUALITY IMPROVEMENT:

  • Quality Improvement Program:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of the departmental performance improvement program. Assists in identifying opportunities to improve and promote change.

  • Educates and provides follow-up to staff concerning performance plans and corrective actions.

  • Resource Utilization: Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for, and used in a cost-effective manner.

  • Safety: Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively.

Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write complex reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Good leadership skills.

Position Requirements:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience:

  • 2 years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant

  • Team building experience

License/Certification:

  • Current CPT certificate issued by the State of California.

  • Current CPR certificate.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Associate's Degree
