Location: Eureka, CA
Work Schedule: Full time - 72 Biweekly hours
Shift: 12 hour, Evenings
The Emergency Department Technician is a member of the patient care team who performs a variety of tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs consistent with the scope of practice for an unlicensed practitioner. The Emergency Department Technician must manage multiple demands on his/her time to support the activity of the nursing staff, facilitate the timely flow of patients through the department, and assist with stocking to ensure that the department is ready to receive and treat patients at all times.
Rooms and prepares the patient for examination and treatment, including undressing the patient and securing the patients belongings in a labeled bag.
Keeps nursing staff promptly informed of any occurrence that requires intervention, e.g. patient/visitor problems, environmental hazards.
Accesses MEDITECH for order entry and other clerical duties as requested.
Answers call lights and responds directly as appropriate. Communicates requests appropriate to nursing in a timely manner.
Safely repositions and moves patients by turning, transferring, and ambulating them in accordance with nursing policy and procedures and M.D. orders.
Assists with the safe extrication of patients from vehicles in a timely manner.
Assists as directed in emergency situations, e.g., CPR, obtaining equipment, restraints, oximeters, bag valve mask, etc.
Under supervision of the nursing staff, provides the patient with comfort measures (e.g. water, blankets, bedpan, urinal, etc.).
Safeguards the privacy of the patient and appropriately handles confidential patient information.
Obtains vital signs and documents such in a timely manner.
Demonstrates the ability to recognize life threatening vital signs and symptoms, and communicates observations to the staff in a timely manner.
Applies equipment for initiating cardiac and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring as directed.
Empties Foley catheters and documents intake and output.
Performs urine dip and urine pregnancy testing (see competency).
Performs non-sterile oral suctioning per hospital policy.
In accordance with department procedure, proficiently cleans and prepares simple wounds for examination and treatment by physician and sets up the appropriate tray.
Prepares/Set-up and assists as directed with splints, ace wraps, slings, immobilizers and crutches in accordance with departmental procedure.
Maintains universal precautions at all times.
Disposes of infectious waste per policy, including the safe removal and disposal of sharps.
Performs timely and legible 12 lead EKG’s as ordered and presents results to MD within five minutes of completion.
Demonstrates knowledge of safe and proper dilution, use, storage, and destruction of chemicals or hazardous materials.
Completes necessary documentation of patient’s vital signs and I & O's.
Performs visual acuity (see competency).
Performs whole blood glucose upon RN or MD request.
Keeps the bedside stocked with linen and supplies.
Principles of body mechanics.
Ability to write legibly and spell correctly.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Willingness and ability to learn tasks through on the job training.
Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy.
Minimum Position Qualifications:
Education : H.S. Diploma or GED
Experience : Experience in a health care setting performing direct patient care.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Education : Coursework/Training - Nursing student or Emergency Medical Technician or Certified Nursing Assistant.
Experience : Military medical or emergency department experience.
