Shift: 8-hour, Evenings

Job Summary:

Under the direction of a Registered Dietician and the Manager of Nutrition Services, the Diet Aide participates in nutritional care and treatment of patients by performing a variety of clerical tasks related to patient care. The Diet Aide is also responsible for maintaining interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships and communications related to clinical nutrition services. Performs food preparation duties as assigned. Delivers quality nutritional care in accordance with the specific needs of infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Interacts with patients and their families in an age-appropriate manner.

Staff members who treat patients of a specific age group must be aware of the TJC requirements specific to that population. The specific information and skills related to the position presented in this job description will be related to the following age group populations: infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates competency in age specific skills related to patients and their families, including infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of diets. Accurately writes or corrects menus. Checks trayline (if applicable). Verifies all food requests are appropriate for prescribed diet. Serves food appropriate to age of the patient.

  • Tallies food items on the production chart accurately and clearly, thus minimizing waste or underproduction

  • Adheres to department infection control and food safety policies. Wears gloves, proper hair covering, and uniforms. Maintains impeccable personal hygiene.

  • The telephone is answered in 2-3 rings with the proper greeting: “Nutrition Services, this is __. How may I help you?” Accurate messages are taken and give to the appropriate person.

  • Works cooperatively with others. Assists others, when possible. Treats co-workers with respect and dignity.

  • QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Resource Utilization: Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for, and used in a cost-effective manner.

  • Safety: Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively.

  • Productivity:

  • Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities in an efficient manner.

  • Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation.

  • Quality Improvement Program: Participates in department problem solving, suggests improvements, and facilitates change.

Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to speak effectively with customers and employees.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience:

  • Food production experience.

  • Computer experience.
