St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Respiratory Care Practitioner I - Respiratory Therapy in Apple Valley, California

We are looking for a Respiratory Care Practitioner I - United Steelworkers for the Respiratory Therapy Department at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: On call/Per diem

Shift: 12 hour, Days ((Variable)

Job Summary:

Provides Respiratory Therapy in all non-critical areas and all adult critical care areas of the hospital as ordered by the Medical Staff of St. Mary Medical Center. Such procedures include but are not limited to, the following: mechanical ventilation (BIPAP), oxygen therapy, limited patient assessments, comprehensive patient assessments (TDP), chest physiotherapy, coughing and breathing exercises, aerosol therapy, CPR, administration of aerosolized medications and therapeutic gases. Draws, analyzes, and interprets blood gases. Performs quality control and maintenance on blood gas and co-oximetry instruments. The RCP I moderately exercise independent judgment, make Respiratory Care decisions and takes action based on the knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Supervises the patient care of Respiratory Care Students. Reports appropriately through the chain of command.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides Respiratory Therapy in all non-critical and all adult critical care areas of the hospital, as ordered by the Medical Staff of St. Mary Medical Center. Proof of ability will be reflected in a complete unit specific “Core Competency”.

  • In Critical Care areas effectively maintains, administers and performs all facets of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, including set-up, maintenance and weaning of patients being mechanically ventilated as ordered by the Physician.

  • Manages a patent airway via aerosol therapy, suctioning and artificial airway devices as directed by the Physician or Therapist Driven Protocols.

  • Administers all modalities of Oxygen Therapy, titrates oxygen to achieve acceptable oxygen levels as ordered by the Physician or Therapist Driven Protocols.

  • Performs Arterial Blood Gas punctures and Arterial Blood Gas Analysis as ordered by the Physician. Records and reports Arterial Blood Gas values to the Physician, Nurse and/or Team Leader.

  • Administers nebulized and aerosolized medications as ordered by the Physician or Therapist Driven Protocols.

  • Manages pulse oximetry as directed by the Physician or Therapist Driven Protocols.

  • Administers Chest Physiotherapy as ordered by the Physician or Therapist Driven Protocols.

  • Performs limited patient assessments, observing for signs and symptoms of the patients pulmonary status.

  • Performs Complete Patient Assessments in a timely manner. Develops a plan of care based on acceptable community standards and Therapist Driven Protocols. Provides clinical pathway for appropriate therapy to be administered.

  • Provides and documents Patient/Family Education within the Respiratory Practitioners scope of practice.

  • Performs administrative tasks including but not limited to, patient charting, billing, scheduling of out patient appointments, handling telephone calls and maintaining patient records.

  • Set-up and monitoring of non-critical applications of CPAP or BIPAP for adult sleep disorders.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities during the provision of care.

Skills :

  • Knowledge of theory and techniques with scope of practice.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of Respiratory Therapy Procedures.

  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot basic Respiratory Therapy equipment.

  • Organizational skills.

  • Critical Thinking skills.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, personal computer and printer).

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - Graduated from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.

Experience : Clinical experience in Respiratory Therapy combined with a background in physiology and pharmacology


  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner by evidence of Primary Source Verification R00047.

  • Basis Life Support For Healthcare Provider (BLS).

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of date of hire.
