Providence Histology Technician in Anchorage, Alaska


Providence is calling a Histology Technician (Anatomic Pathology, Variable , 1.0 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • Perform histology procedures including embedding, cutting, mounting, staining, (routine, special and immunohistochemical) of surgical tissue specimens.

  • Generate and complete worksheets, temperature logs, workload entry and equipment maintenance logs.

  • Effectively communicates with lab and hospital staff, physician and office staff, to ensure accurate and timely completion of the daily pathology workload. Assists in transcription, gross area and cytology as necessary.

  • Generate U.O.I's, verifies positivity of special and routing stains and participates in the QC/QI through focused monitors for Q-probes.

  • Comply with lab and hospital safety procedures and practices Body Substance Isolation. Completes education necessary to maintain licensure or certification required for job.

  • Independently resolves U.O.I.'s whenever possible. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions whenever possible. Directs complex problems appropriately.

  • Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Graduate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program OR Associate's Degree from an accredited program with 12 semester (18 quarter hours) hours in biology and chemistry.

  • H.T certification per American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or eligible under one of the following per ASCP guidelines:

  • Note: Eligible candidates must obtain certification within 18 months of hire.

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last 5 years prior to the date of application for examination; or Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry, and one year full time experience in histopathology in the U.S., Canada, or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years under the supervision of a board certified Pathologist or Medical Scientist.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • One (1) year of histotechnology experience
